As part of the social events, two social tours are organised for the afternoon of Wednesday, September 17.
Duomo Trekking guides the two tours.
- Visit to the Archaeological Park of Paestum by train.
Paestum was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia. The ruins of Paestum are famous for their three ancient Greek temples in the Doric order, dating from about 550 to 450 BCE, and they are in an excellent state of preservation. The city walls and amphitheatre are largely intact, and the bottoms of the walls of many other structures remain, as do paved roads. Many of the most celebrated features of the site today are the three significant temples in the Archaic version of the Greek Doric order, dating from about 550 to 450 BCE. All are typical of the period, with massive colonnades having a very pronounced entasis (widening as they go down), and very wide capitals resembling upturned mushrooms. Above the columns, only the second Temple of Hera retains most of its entablature, the other two having only the architrave in place. These were dedicated to Hera and Athena (Juno and Minerva to the Romans), although previously they had often been identified otherwise, following eighteenth-century arguments. The two temples of Hera are right next to each other, while the Temple of Athena is on the other side of the town center. There were other Greek and Roman temples, which are far less well preserved.
- Urban Trekking to Amalfi and Atrani by boat.
Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. Between 839 and 1200, it was the capital of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, a significant trading power in the Mediterranean. The town became a popular seaside resort beginning in the Edwardian era, with members of the British upper class spending their winters in Amalfi. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Atrani is a city and comune on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is located east of Amalfi. The municipality of Atrani has a land area of 12 ha (30 acres), making it the smallest in Italy. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful villages of Italy).
